Life in Balance Changing Lives…Summer’s Story
I have cerebral palsy accompanied by years of chronic pain that has intensified in frequency over the years. I am married with three beautiful children. Marla and I met at church and we realized that we both suffered from chronic pain.
A couple of years ago, Marla came over to tell me about this wild idea for Life in Balance. She wanted to help women like us who have been suffering, both physical and emotional—or even suffering from the absence of God in their lives.
Her trust in the Lord to make this vision a reality inspired me to sell our two story home because the stairs were extremely hard on me and they were separating me from my family. I would go upstairs in the afternoon to rest and stay there because I couldn’t bare the thought of using the stairs again. So my prayer was to simply find a home that would meet my basic needs. Instead, God pulled out all the stops: He saved a brand new build for us with all the upgrades included! I’m convinced that we would not own the beautiful home we live in today if Marla’s inspiration for LIB had not set the example for me to take a risk and trust God to provide for my family.
Earlier this year I started attending the Fill my Cup summer fellowship group at Life in Balance. I was attending church less and less. Not because I was struggling with my faith, but because it was so difficult for me to sit through service in pain. My faith was flourishing and I felt a great need for community. I am basically housebound in my limitations. Playdates with other moms at the park, the pool, and the zoo are just out of the question for me. Friendships and community are difficult. The Fill my Cup fellowship was just what I needed.
At LIB, I get to enjoy fellowship in Christ with other women and I can be comfortable at the same time. When you come, you come as you are –whether that be in a t shirt and jeans, or your workout clothes. We are real with each other and we don’t try to be something that we are not.
This ministry has huge potential to grow and reach our community in new ways. I see potential for love and healing, for friendships, and possibly even whole families. I see potential that could go above and beyond anything Marla ever imagined …because that is how God works.
I really believe in the work that Marla is doing and wants to do in the future at Life in Balance. The connections I’ve made are authentic and loving –and free of judgment.
